Members Sheilz
Well here's my positive: I made myself a salad (not just lettuce) with red peppers & cheese & turkey. It's been a long while since I've had one & it was either throw the stuff away or make a salad. It was pretty good. I struggle with eating alone though. I hate it.

I eat salads more in the summer - most of mine are very simple though as I've gotten so lazy about making meals. I usually get the bagged salad and then maybe sprinkle some shredded carrots or sunflower seeds in. Today I treated myself and had shrimp (I'd bought previously), something I rarely have. It was the store brand and they were kind of bland tbh, but nothing Old Bay can't help along 1

Moderators Popular Post KayC Posted June 17 Author Moderators Popular Post Report Share Posted June 17 Okay, my positive last night...I turned on the tv and it said it'd be two hours and they were aware of the situation and working on it. ??? So I called them, was shocked when someone picked up after the 13+ min. wait. She helped me get it reset and back working, apparently it'd been down for hours but I hadn't had it on. I don't know how but we got onto Diabetes and I told her I'm an admin. for a diabetic group, it and grief are my passions...she perked up, said her BS is 400 (that is a LOT!) and we found each other on FB and I sent her an invite. Her first visit with an endocrinologist is next week, and she's moving in two weeks, so will suggest with all on her plate that she wait until moved and I can help her get started with Keto and she'll be off the meds within the year, so long as she follows through. I can give her recipes, guide her along the way but only she can make it happen. Anyway, it made my day. A perfect ending to a day that bummed out otherwise! 3 1

I wish I knew about Keto & your information before because Brian has diabetes and I struggle to keep his numbers good. The last 8 months I had his A1C down to 6.1 and was pretty proud of that feat. But he was on a lot of medication too. I would have loved the challenge with the keto diet but was unaware. 1
Moderators KayC Posted June 17 Author Moderators Report Share Posted June 17 My son and my friend kept putting the bug in my ear for about a year, gently but my son showed me evidence and I knew it worked for my friend as well, I've known him for 7-8 years on my other grief site, as well as the diabetic group. I'm amazed at all it's done for me. And my son is not diabetic, he just believes in the very low carb way of life, at this rate, he'll never get it. And my husband too, that was before I was diagnosed, we did everything we were told, but alas they followed the 50 year old guidelines that didn't work.

Was supposed to meet some people who I couldn't find, so ended up being joined by a lady who was looking for a table so I offered mine, along with her daughter and daughter's friend (and the daughter's baby, who I was relieved was so well behaved) and had a nice time chatting with them. And yet again, here I am thankful for our internist of 20+ years. When John was diagnosed with borderline diabetes (on top of the permanent injuries from his bicycling accident, which did alter his activity level and weight), our doctor did not say, "Here's a pill. Don't eat sugar." (or whatever the old advice was). Instead he said, "Here's a baby dose of the first medication we try. We need to get your BS levels normal. And here's a prescription for an education course that you both will attend. It was created and is run by an endocrinology nurse who worked with modern specialists. You'll learn how diabetes really works and what you need to do to reverse it." And we did. It was 8 weeks, one 4 hour session per week--plus "homework." Each class focused on a specific subject, like body mechanics, the real causes of high blood sugar, hidden food sabotages, dietary changes, individual needs, etc. Armed with that knowledge, John made modest changes to his already pretty darn good diet (which meant I did too). He figured out a couple of gentle exercises that didn't make his other conditions worse. He was vigilant. His A1C went from 6.6 to 5.7 to 4.5 and stayed there; his FBS went from 140 average to 85 average; he lost about 30 lb over 18 months. Because of that, he not only never graduated beyond the baby dose of Metformin, but after 2 years, our doctor told him to stop taking it because he had reversed his diabetes. John followed the excellent educational information and advice for the rest of his life. I realize most people aren't as lucky as we were with our doctor, though I really give the credit to John himself. We came home from the appointment that day and he said, "I'm not having this! I'm just not having it! I can't change my injuries, but I can damn well change this." The man could sometimes be stubborn in the best way. (p.s., Hope the swear didn't offend. He wasn't a big swearer, but that was a direct quote.) My positive out of all that is that when our doctor sat down with me to look at changes I'd need to make after John died, I knew whatever he recommended would be based on modern knowledge and experience. He told me that Keto and related diets aren't right for me, explained why, and then we figured out that reducing my carb intake by 50% and increasing lean protein would be a good place to start. It was and now I've lost 28 of the nearly 50 lb I gained while we were fighting John's cancer and in the first several months after.
Moderators KayC Posted June 18 Author Moderators Report Share Posted June 18 It 's not only the doctor and advice given, but everyone's body is unique and does not respond the same. I eat under 20 carbs a day yet am rarely in the 80s. We aren't all cookie cutters, for sure, so John was one of the lucky ones. Our church has had a long standing tradition of "Pies for the Guys" on Father's Day, they all get to take home a pie, so us women fix one and bring it to church. When George was dying in the hospital on Father's Day, he was worried about his pie! So I told him, "This one's for you, George." I made a chocolate peanut butter cheesecake pie. 2

Off produced a small clip on fan with replaceable cartridge for mosquitoes and it worked very well, alas it was pulled from the market(probably highly poisonous) and I have not found anything that works as well. Her Husky doesn't seem unnerved by it but I sent her the article anyway, she has about three of them in her kitchen, probably overkill, esp. around pets. Moderators widower2 Posted June 20 Moderators Report Share Posted June 20 IMO the most human(E!) mouse trap is the old-fashioned ones because they are quick. I would not recommend the "box" ones which trap the mouse because I tried that and it died anyway - and I think I realized why - it either suffocated or died of fright because it couldn't get out of that extremely cramped area it was in all night. I felt terrible about it and would never use or recommend. And hopefully it goes without saying the glue traps are horribly cruel and shouldn't even be legal. I guess maybe if you had a bigger trap which has sufficient air flow (like a small cage) that would be best.

I had the same thing with regards to my husband's heart...his doctor ignored his complaints and never referred him to a Cardiologist. Members foreverhis
Two positives today. I got a good start on some long overdue gardening. It was sunny for the second day in a row! Windy, but nice. A friend stopped by for a short visit. She has been very busy with family and home stuff, so Cosi doesn’t know her well. But my girl said, “I remember you! You’re our friend.” And she was right over weaving, saying hi, and showing her toys. Yesterday’s positive was taking a friend out for a birthday lunch. We sat outside and had delicious, fresh, casual food with the sun shining (we found a table with shade) and a view of the ocean. It was nice.
Moderators widower2 Posted June 21 Moderators Report Share Posted June 21 My positive for today: I remembered my beloved in a good, not painful, way. I was in the living room and standing in front of the TV watching something briefly and as I turned to exit and because I wasn't paying attention, almost ran right into a chair and fell. I could see her laughing and/or making a joke about my stupidity. 1
