Dear All,

I've been compiling Songs for Grief. I've been on the web searching. I've posted on other sites and I'm interested in what songs you use to help you grieve, or songs you sang to your children, or were sung or played at a memorial or funeral service. I now take a playlist with me in the car and listen at home and at the cemetery when I'm reflecting and thinking about my sweet baby.

Here are some on my list:

Have No Fear (Byrd York)

Chapter One (Lifehouse)

I Will be Gentle With myself (Libana)

Pie Jesu from Requiem (John Rutter)

Lullaby (Creed)

All the Pretty Little Ponies (Kenny Loggins)

Hope you will share. I'll add your songs to the long list and then post here so all can use. Peace, Caitsmom

There Are No Unlockable Doors

There Are No Unwinnable Wars

There Are No Unrightable Wrongs

Or Unsingable Songs

There Are No Unbeatable Odds

There Are No Unnameable Names,

Shall I Say It Again, Yeah

There Are No Impossible Dreams

There Are No Invisible Seams

Each Night When Day Is Through

I Don't Ask Much

I Just Want You

I Just Want You

There Are No Uncriminal Crimes

There Are No Unrhymable Rhymes

There Are No Identical Twins

Or Forgivable Sins

There Are No Incurable Ills

There Are No Unkillable Thrills

One Thing And You Know It's True

I Don't Ask Much

I Just Want You

I Just Want You

I Just Want You

I Just Want You

I'm Sick And Tired Of Bein' Sick And Tired

I Used To Go To Bed So High And Wired

Yeah - Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

I Think I'll Buy Myself Some Plastic Water

Yeah - Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

There Are No Unachievable Goals

There Are No Unsaveable Souls

No Legitimate Kings Or Queens,

Do You Know What I Mean? Yeah

There Are No Undisputable Truths

And There Ain't No Fountain Of Youth

Each Night When Day Is Through

I Don't Ask Much

I Just Want You [6 Times]

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

I Just Want You

I Just Want You

Hey, Yeah,

I Just Want You

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

I Just Want You,

Hey

I Just Want You

I Just Want You

this song is about me missing my mom

Mikes music was as indivual as the man he was.  On his memorial site there are songs downloaded by his sister.  I have listed  just a few from that site and some that just take me there.............

Ben Harper - Beloved One -  (a song Mike loved as it described his life with and love for Lauren)

Hurt - Christine Agurila

One Sweet Day - Mariah Carey

Slipped Away - Avril Lavigne

Waiting on an Angel'

Waiting on an angel

one to carry me home

hope you come to see me soon

cause I don't want to go alone

I don't want to go alone

Now angel won't you come by me

angel hear my plea

take my hand lift me up

so that I can fly with thee

so that I can fly with thee

And I'm waiting on an angel

and I know it won't be long

to find myself a resting place

in my angel's arms

in my angel's arms

So speak kind to a stranger

cause you'll never know

it just might be an angel come

knockin' at your door

knockin' at your door

And I'm waiting on an angel

and I know it won't be long

to find myself a resting place

in my angel's arms

in my angel's arms

Waiting on an angel

one to carry me home

hope you come to see me soon

cause I don't want to go alone

I don't want to go alone

don't want to go

I don't want to go alone

Ben Harper

These are but lyrics, words spoken in a whisper.

Great topic. So many songs remind me of my boy. My own favorite is one we used for david's memorial video. Its called Tattva, and is about the Eternal Soul, our oneness with God, our eternal place with Him. I know its a bit different from what many of you follow, but it is special to us, and our faith. Hope it doesn't confuse anyone:)The song can be heard here, on David's video:

About David's song

Tattva, by Kula Shaker

Tattva, acintya bheda abheda tattva (x4)

Like the flower and the scent of summer, like the sun and the shine

Well the truth may come in strange disguises, send a message to your mind

Tattva, acintya bheda abheda tattva (x4)

At the moment that you wake from sleeping, and you know it's all a dream

Well the truth may come in strange disguises, never knowing what it means

Tattva, acintya bheda abheda tattva (x4)

For you shall be tomorrow, like you have been today

If this was never ending, what more can you say?

acintya-bhedabheda-tattva

But what does this mean?

Acintya-bhedåbheda-tattva

(Simultaneous oneness and difference of the Lord and His potencies. The living entities (jîvas), the material world , and the Lord's personal splendour as regards His Vaikuv†ha existence are inconceivably one and different from His original spiritual form . The anucit-jîvas, on account of being dependent on the Lord, are His separated parts and parcels—in this is found their non-distinction from the Lord (abheda). However, due to an absence of knowledge of the Supreme Lord, they are preoccupied with the material energy—in this lies their difference (bheda).

In other words...

Though we come in various forms and though we are all individuals, we all come from the same source, we are made of the same material/substance, but we are very much different from each other physically. The same is true for everything in nature.

As for "Tattva", tattva means reality, principle, and truth. It can be thought of as an awakening, when one realizes that there is more to life than what he sees through his eyes.

A better way to look at it is like this: There is no creation of the living entity. We are eternal entities, separated expansions of the One Lord. From the angle of the Lord, He is everything, including us. From the angle of the separated expansion, we are different from the Lord. Thus, there is simultaneous oneness and difference/inscrutable simultaneous distinction and non-distinction ("tattva achintya bheda bheda tattva") based on the angle of vision of the perceiver.

Dear Parents,

Here it is a list of Songs for Grief. Many of these songs come from other sites about grief and other titles shared by parents from different forums. The 350 some songs are in alpha order according to title. There are likely misspellings so please be patient. Some of these songs are specific to the child, but I have included them because they represent each parent's love and connection to their children. One astrisk means the song was referred a few times by several different parents, two asterisks are the most recent additions to the list.

Peace to all. Missing all our children. Hoping these songs may help others.

I have listened and listened to this ~ this week's, been rather 'flat, numb' etc.   My loss is my husband, hope I'm not too far off base, but I get more out of alot of your Christian based threads.

I Can Only Imagine  (Our loved ones are there and we can only imagine!)

I Can Only Imagine

Surrounded by Your glory

what will  my heart feel?

Will I dance for you Jesus? or

in awe of you be still?

Will I  stand in Your presence? or

To my knees will I fall?

Will I sing Hallelujah? or

be able to speak at?

I can Only Imagine

When that day comes for me and,

I find myself standing in the son(?)

When our lifes are all through

Will I forever, forever?

forever worship You?

I can only imagine.....................

My son's cousin sang "I Can Only Imagine" at his memorial service. It's a beautiful song.  I also love "Homesick" by Mercy Me.

I had this song sung at my husband's memorial, He had two different cancers when he passed away. He loved music. I miss him.and love him very much.

by The Easter Brothers

I'll have a heart that will never break again.

I remember standing at my daddy's bedside,

And the tears filled up the wrinkles on his face;

As I held his withered hand he smiled and whispered,

Son, I'm going to live in a better place.

And I'll have eyes that will never fill with teardrops,

I'll have legs that will never ache with pain;

I'll have hands that will never age and wither,

And a heart that will never break again.

I have often heard and read about a city,

Where with Jesus, we shall live for evermore;

And a mansion's in construction for my dwelling,

And the streets of gold will run by my front door.

And I'll have eyes that will never fill with teardrops,

I'll have legs that will never ache with pain;

I'll have hands that will never age and wither,

And a heart that will never break again.

I'll have hands that will never age and wither,

And a heart that will never break again.

Oh Bonnie,  How that site and the song Homesick touched me.  So many times when people ask me how I am doing I have replied "I'm Homesick".  Of course that throws them off completely.   But, that does sum it up so closely.

Thanks again,

Cheryl

There is a song that I think is one of the most beautiful hope-filled songs I have ever heard.  It's called "Held", and was written by Natalie Grant for a friend of hers who lost a child.  I also like the two Mercy Me songs that were mentioned.  I seem to find more comfort in the songs that refence Hope in our Savior versus the secular tug at and break your heart over and over songs.  I could easily sit and listen to them and live a lifetime of tears, but when I get to where my son is I want to be able to tell him all of the wonderful things I did and shared in his memory and honor...not just that I drowned in a sea of tears.  Jesus gives me that hope, and the beautiful hope-filled songs are a wonderful reminder when the tidal waves come in.  Hugs, Claudia

Don't forget "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns and Roses. It used to be a song that reminded me of life, since it was popular about the time when my boys were born. Now, its more meloncholic.

Love all!

Here's another song that may provide some comfort. "Love is Like a Butterfly" by Dolly Parton. The butterfly connection as a symbol of the death of a loved on and hopes that they fly free and rest peacefully in eternal life.

Here are a few lyrics.

Love is like a butterfly

As soft and gentle as a sigh

The multicolored moods of love

are like it's satin wings

Peace,

Dear all, I have created a page on myspace for those who have lost a child due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or death. It has some great songs on it, great quotes, and poems (some that I wrote and found). It is a place where you can go and comment or message anything you need to talk about or get out and it is really nice to talk to others that have been through what you have. Please take a look at it and if you have a myspace add it if not just feel free to browse. Thanks Amanda
