Not yet. I did watch Black Widow at home when it came out.

Not a great movie, but has some silly fun stuff.  Not going to win any awards but it's fun light entertainment.   Lots of blowing stuff up.

Exactly....

reader, I haven't gone to a theater in many years. In my neck of the woods, too many idiots that don't understand when a movie starts to shut up. :)

Hahaha!  I went to a movie theater last night.  First time in probably 2 years.  I very much dislike going to see movies for the same reason you stated @widower2.  If I do go I have to be in the back row and I refuse to go on the weekend.  I will also wait a few weeks so less people will be there!

I did see Disney’s Cruella.  I thought it was a great version of the animated 101 Dalmatians.

Haven't seen that but I heard it was good!

Black Widow - your basic superhero movie, not great but not bad either. Jokes were kinda lame IMO but lots of action, martial arts fights, stuff blowing up, etc etc. A light summer kind of movie.

Hi SSC and widower2,

We are so alike.:-) I'm an introvert so I don't know if that is part of it, but I too cannot stand people checking their cell phones and talking during the movie.:-)

If possible, I try to go during a quieter time if possible.:-)

There were so many big movies I was looking forward to seeing last year. I really want to see the new Tom Cruise movie Maverick.:-) It's supposed be out closer to Christmas now.

I don't think being an introvert is part of it. I think you're not an obnoxious idiot and they are is ALL of it.

Wow first I heard of that. I'm very leery of sequels...hopefully it's good.

Meanwhile I saw "Lone Star," what's called a "neo Western" film starring Kris Kristofferson and Chris Cooper. Basically a small Texas town in the 1980s ish and Cooper is a sheriff who investigates the disappearance of a sheriff who was a scumbag and whose corpse is found in the desert many years later. Kris K does really well in this film but it didn't work for me overall. Dragged a lot IMO.

Kong Skull Island - a King Kong reboot. Not without its flaws, for sure but hey it's a monster movie, you can't expect a "great movie." Some good action and effects. A decent enough light summer movie for what it is.

An odd, independent documentary on You Tube, that was actually very uplifting is a movie called 'Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead'.  It was done by an Australian business man, who due to rather horrible symptoms of his illness, took the extreme step of going on a 60 day juice fast (fruits and veggies), under close medical supervision.

He is a very outgoing and amiable fellow who shares his journey with all those he meets.

The documentary follows him and others who join him on the journey towards wellness, for a couple of years.

He didn't seem to be selling anything.

It was a very positive film and reminded you of in the goodness of people.  Something we all can benefit from.

The story line is certainly dark, but I enjoy musicals, so I recommend Phantom of the Opera (2004) free on YouTube. Full movie, no ads.

You can't really go wrong watching anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

As previously mentioned by others, there are lots of movies free on YouTube.

Not a lot of action at the moment on this thread but since winter is just around the corner thought I’d ask for suggestions on everyone’s favorite all time movie?!

Reader,

Thanks for the clip of Thoroughly Modern Millie.  That was great.

I have seen it and loved it but I'll watch it again soon.

I have watched Hamilton 5 or 6 times. Love it. I have Disney plus, because I can't watch scary, violent films - never could even with my sweetie.  I recently enjoyed Coco, a Disney animated film.

SSC - A silly movie that is one of my all time favorites is Galaxy Quest.  Just goofy, but sweet.

Movies can sometimes be a good distraction for your grief ridden brain, though I really wasn't able to watch much of anything my first year.

Hahaha!  I just watched Galaxy Quest last night!  I remember watching it from before but my SIL loves it and bought it to watch it with my daughter.  So we all watched it together.

I always love to watch “oldies but goodies” movies.  And I’m a sucker for a good rom/com too.

I love Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightly, Emma with Anya Taylor-Joy, The Help, Hidden Figures, and the Color Purple just to name a few.

Forgot about this thread! Let's see, the latest...

Murder on the Orient Express (1974 version) - an all-star cast led by Albert Finney as Hercule Poirot in a classic murder mystery and well done IMO. I'm curious to see the newer remake now.

News of the World - Tom Hanks stars in a western and it's also well done. Even if you're not a big western fan you might like this (esp if you like Hanks).

Harvey - Classic James Stewart movie about his imaginary (?) tall rabbit friend. Quirky fun.

Klaus - on Netflix, an animation of the origin of Santa Claus. Well done IMO.

Atlantis - another animation, Disney, about a young guy trying to find the lost city/continent. OKish :)

Thanks same to you!

I just watched "Gone Girl," a legal/crime thriller starring George Clooney. eh. Not terrible but nothing great. If you're in the mood for such a thing it could be worth the watch, just keep expectations modest.

Before that was "The Fifth Element," an absolutely terrible sci fi movie IMO with Bruce Willis.

Just saw Rooster Cogburn on TV. Long time since I saw it. Holds up very well...the plot isn't anything amazing, but the dialogue between John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn carries it.

Continuing westerns (I get this channel that's nothing but westerns 24/7), Outlaw Josey Wales. IMO the best western ever made. Drama, comedy, action, has it all (including many great quotable lines).

Hi Widower,

Thanks for the updates. Glad to hear you're enjoying this channel with westerns.

What did you think of the Oscar nominations?

I haven't watched any of the movies. I would love to hear what everyone thinks.

Take care and have a good week.

Hi reader, to be honest I pay no attention to awards so can't say. And no clue what the latest movies are, I only rent, don't go to theaters. :)

Hi widower2,

Please no worries. I haven't been keeping up and hardly see any movies even on Netflix and Amazon Prime.:-)

I'll try to watch the movie trailers on YouTube.

Thanks for responding to my question.

Another western came on last night, True Grit (the original). Holds up well with a great supporting cast.

People rave about it but to be honest it didn't do much for me. Not saying it's bad, just much prefer the original :)

Saw John Wick recently...Keanu Reeves in a typical shoot em up thing where he's an ex-hit man who is attacked in his home and seeks revenge on those who did it. It's not excessively gory or anything but a lot of people getting shot etc so not for the faint of heart. :)  For some reason I felt like a mindless action flick so it was OK that way, but nothing amazing to say the least.

The Adam Project (on Netflix) Ryan Reynolds stars as a pilot from 2050 who travels back to 2022 and meets his 12 yr old self. I like time travel stuff but this was weak IMO...didn't make it even quite half-way through.

Thanks for letting us know widower2.

Did anyone watch the Oscars?

So many people loved CODA, but I haven't had a chance to watch it.

It's been many years since I had any interest in watching the Oscars, but I saw the clip of that disgusting POS Will Smith. The only thing that nauseated me more than that was how (I heard, thankfully didn't see) the audience gave him a standing ovation. Are you freaking kidding me....I will never pay to see a movie in a theater again or even rent one. They will never make money from me again. I'll just have to hope I can see it on Youtube or whatever. What a dirtball thug.

@widower2. I sincerely hope the State brings criminal charges against him.  They don't need Chris Rock to press charges, there are plenty of witnesses to the crime.

I also can not believe that Will Smith was not escorted out of the building by security immediately!  He should not have had the opportunity to accept his award.

It is disgusting that he was treated like the law did not apply to him.

Just my opinion.

Are you kidding? He won't have charges pressed against him. You watch, before long this will all die down and he will basically get a free pass. If I was in charge of the Oscars, I'd say hey Will Smith: I don't care what awards you are up for in the future, you are not permitted to attend the ceremonies. Bad enough he wasn't escorted out, but a standing ovation? Really? What should have happened is he was booed and/or half the people left in disgust. Hate to say it but I think that's largely because he's black and Hollywood is nothing but one mass of white guilt idiots. Whoopi Goldberg (another repulsively weak excuse for a human being) is, to no one's surprise, playing the race card. Can you believe the gall?

ugh it all makes me almost physically ill, sorry, should not have even gone there. But if I review a movie here, I guarantee it won't be one I paid for. I'm protesting in the only way I can: with my wallet.

Too bad about The Giver.  I liked the book.

I haven’t seen CODA either.  Maybe I’ll get around to it as I’ve been meaning to give it a try but keep forgetting about it.

I do think Chris Rock was wrong with his “joke”.  I Think as a society we’ve moved past making fun of people’s medical conditions and especially at such a huge social event.  I know the Oscar’s has become something of a political myopic montage….A bunch of rich people who need to look and act pretty, slap each other on the back and tell each other how amazing they all are….Who cares what these people think?  They don’t live in the real world!  Isn’t this obvious with how Will Smith reacted with cursing and violence and then later he gets an award with a standing ovation?  I have little respect for the industry.  Glitz and Glamor but underneath it’s all rotten.

We all agree that what he did was not acceptable. If I was Chris I would have pressed charges and filed a lawsuit.

Apparently they did ask him to leave but he had the audacity to say no!

Honestly, I don't think there was really anything wrong with the joke.  Jada Pinket Smith is an actor ( not just the wife of an actor).  She has spoken publically many times about her medical condition and her baldness.  She sat up front, head shaved and proud.  The Oscar's host often banters with the celebrities in attendance.  Chris Rock said 'Jada, I love you, can't wait for G.I. Jane 2.'

In G. I. Jane, the beautiful, strong protagonist (Demi Moore) shaved her head and overcame all sorts of impediments to her success.

So, I honestly don't understand how that was any sort of insult to Jada.  Yes it recognized her baldness, but not in a bad way and Jada has been very open about her condition.

It didn't seem like it was intended to embarrass her or to be  hurtful  in anyway.  It seemed to me to be a very softball joke that shouldn't have offended anyone.

Just my opinion.

...and they should have forcibly removed the ahole. What an arrogant POS. Now he has a whole team of PR people telling him what to say for damage control and in the long run I've no doubt he'll get away with it. It turns my stomach. They should tell him to return the award and give it to someone else. Or at least institute a "no thug" clause, where if you commit/are convicted of a crime, you cannot get an award.

Hi Gail,

I hear you and I didn't think the joke was that bad. Ricky Gervais said he would have been even harsher and joked about his wife's affair.

So true Widower2. I think all the Academy can do is ban him from all future shows. But they let Harvey Weinstein and Roman Polanski keep their Oscars so there is doubt they will make him return the Oscar for Best Actor.

Back to movies...

Saw "Free Guy" - Ryan Reynolds stars as a computer character in a game who becomes self-aware. A light-hearted comedy and although clearly geared more to younger generations (some of the references/jokes/etc I didn't get or find as funny as I'm sure younger kids would) and nothing amazing, I liked it in general. If you ever saw "Ready Player One," it's similar to that.

Watched the latest Spiderman movies (from 2019 and 2021) and IMO rather weak. Plenty of action and effects so if that's all you care about, fine, but I wanted and expected more...

A film called "The Northmen" (about Viking lore) is up next.

Skipped The Northmen, I heard it had a lot of violence and nudity/sex scenes and I don't care how realistic it is of those times, pass.

Went the other direction and watched Raya, a Disney animation which is very kid and family friendly, maybe almost a bit much for an adult, but I liked it anyway. Very well done.

And here I thought my sister and I were the only ones who truly loved it. Soooo silly, with a great cast and good message. Plus, if you know sci fi, especially Star Trek, the humor really works.

Did you see the documentary about making it that was on Prime? It’s called Never Surrender.

Two other movies I really love are My Cousin Vinny  and  My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Jiminy Glick in Lalawood - Based on Martin Short's silly celebrity interview character from back when (if you're not familiar, there are numerous videos on youtube...the list of people he's interviewed is pretty impressive). I was a fan of this character, and assumed the movie would be similar, but it was not. Very few interviews, just some hokey plot and a lot of frankly not very funny humor IMO. A lot of it was in the sewer and while I'm not skittish about that, at the same time something isn't funny just because it's in the sewer either. I don't advise, even if you liked the character.

61 - a movie about NY Yankee Roger Maris the year he broke Babe Ruth's home run record. Directed and produced by Billy Crystal (a huge baseball fan), this was well done IMO. He played the characters and the situation faithfully and didn't resort to cheap "Hollywood tricks" to get a reaction. Does not paint Yankee fans in a good light but that's how they were.

The Cowboys - John Wayne movie about him doing a cattle drive with some young kids because he can't find enough men to do it. It's OK. If you like John Wayne it's worth the watch but don't expect anything great. Bruce Dern steals the show as the bad guy.
